Madison Soil and Water Conservation District Annual Banquet and Election

Neil Babb and Bob Hunter won the election for supervisor at the Madison Soil and Water Conservation District annual conservation meeting and banquet at Trinity Episcopal Church, London, on November 19.  Dawn Assen, Jay Mitchell and Joe Timmons also ran.  There were 72 votes cast in the election.

Several awards were given at the banquet.  Julia Cumming thanked retiring supervisors Roger Call for 9 years and Mike Young for 6 years of outstanding service.  Also, Elizabeth Long, representing Farm Credit Services of Mid America, and Andra Troyer, Board Supervisor, honored the 2009 District Cooperator of the Year, Geoff Smith of Gran-Win-Sar Farms.  Sara Morris, District Conservationist, gave a slide show highlighting his many examples of good land stewardship, such as wetland restoration, prairie grass seeding, windbreaks and livestock fencing.

The final award at the banquet was the County Top-Ranked Envirothon Team.  The Envirothon is an annual environmental competition for high school students sponsored by the Soil and Water Districts and locally by the Madison Conservation Foundation.  Students Chloe Lash, Victoria Ellis, Oksana Demchuk, Kathlyn Miller, and teacher Mitch Koester accepted the rotating plaque from Howard Yoder, Board Supervisor, on behalf of Jonathan Alder H.S.

The banquet concluded with an entertaining presentation on “Ohio’s Natural Heritage” by Tom Hissong from Aullwood Audobon Center and Farm.
